Parkinson’s Disease (PD), named after noted English physician James Parkinson, after writing his essay: ‘An Essay on Shaking Palsy’ in 1817,’ can be described as “…a degenerative disease of the brain (central nervous system) that often impairs motor skills, speech, and other functions…It is characterized by muscle rigidity, tremor, a slowing of physical movement…and in extreme cases, a loss of physical movement.” It is written that the symptoms of this disease process vary from patient to patient and although it is primarily affects movement, “…other typical symptoms include disorders of mood, behavior, thinking, and sensation (non-motor symptoms)…[In addition,] progression of the disease is also distinctly individual (1 ).”
Due to the large amount of free radical production in this disease, "... reduced levels of CoQ-10 have been demonstrated in the platelets of individuals with PD [Parkinson’s Desease]...(2) Interestingly though, a recent study suggested that higher doses were much more effective at slowing the progression of the disease than that of lower doses. This finding indicated that “…adequate plasma levels may need to be reached before a chemical effect is observed (3).” It is written that a patient is more likely to see positive results if the CoQ-10 supplementation is "...initiated early in the course of the disease (4)." Therefore, it is important for these clients to be patient and not expect immediate results.
In addition, research in patients with Parkinson’s Disease also showed that these individuals had “…significantly lowered levels of glutathione than in healthy brains (5).” Blaylock continues that “…a fall in the glutathione levels of the cells within the substantia nigra [a part of the brain] appears to be one of the earliest findings in Parkinson’s disease (6).”
Tyrosine, “…one of the 20 amino acids that are used by cells to synthesize proteins…is a non-essential amino acid (7).” It is written that “…m-tyrosine and analogues…have shown [potential] application in Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, and arthritis (8).” According to pharmacist Clell Fowles, in the book Drugs and Nutrient Depletion, it states that “tyrosine is a precursor to several neurotransmitters. Due to this fact, a depletion of tyrosine may cause emotional disturbances, depressed thyroid function, and reduced metabolism (9).” Tyrosine, “…found in high concentrations in cheese, is converted by specific reactions into at least two neurotransmitters – norepinephrine and dopamine…Tyrosine, by increasing the brain’s norepinephrine, can elevate the mood and stimulate a sense of well being (10).”
